FamilySearch is a organization and tool that is provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is completely free for anyone and is quite useful if you are just starting you genealogy. I will outline briefly the steps of starting you family tree in FamilySearch, so you can begin the path of discovery.
Steps to start your family tree
You have to create an account
In order to create an account you first must give your first and last name followed by a username and password of your choice. This is where your creativity shines as you come up with a awesome username. You can make whatever you like the username, just remember others will see it as you add and edit people in FamilySearch.
Here is what you will see are the screens and info that you will see and need as you sign up.
Home Screen of FamilySearch. Click Free Account in top right corner to start the account making process.
First screen you will see asks for Name, Username and Password. It will let you know if a username is taken.
Give a recovery option in case you forget your username and password.
Fill out the rest of the information. If you are a member of the LDS faith then there is also a slot to put your membership record number which you can get from a member of the bishopric or clerk.
2. Sign in with your username and password. From there you will be brought to the hub. This is where you can see ancestors that have hints on them, recently viewed ancestors and to do tasks that you write down to remember.
3. Click Family Tree at the top of the screen which will take you to your personal family tree. If this is your first time than click on the pop up tab that says Are You New?
4. This will take you to a form that will allow you to fill out your information for your Parents and Grandparents. This is the best way to put a base down for your tree.
5. If you have ancestor within two or three generations that have passed away than as you try and put their info in the program will automatically search to see if someone has already put them in the system. If they have then you can tap into their tree, where work may have already been done.
Choose correct ancestor
Lines will automatically merge and you will have much more information and individuals added to your tree.
This is the most efficient way to start to build your tree and collaborate with other researchers. Continue this process for the other grandparents and you will have a very good base to begin your research and find your ancestors. Happy Searching!
